Hair and Skin Care TIPS for Winter and the Cold

It is hard to focus on the fact that different seasons require different amounts of care for skin and hair. Unfortunately, when it’s the busiest time of year, your hair and skin need the most attention! Some Tips and Tricks to keeping your Hair and Skin in Perfect Condition in the Cold Winter Months:

HAIR:

  • Less Washing and Straightening
  • More Hair Masks (for split end breakage or deep conditioning) and Products (for volume and breakage) to help growth and split ends
  • Wear it in different styles to help with breakage (high pony one day, low pony another, down another day)
  • Get rid of any shampoo or Conditioner with lots of sulfates in it (this can be very, damaging and tolling on your hair)
  • Change your pillowcases often and try a silk pillowcase (it is supposed to help breakage!)
  • Take a Hair, Skin, and Nails supplement to keep it strong!
  • Use styling cream and hairspray with a low alcohol content.

SKIN:

  • Face Masks (focus on moisturizing and brightening masks)
  • Lots of Moisturizer
  • Not using face wash that will dry out your skin
  • Focus on keeping it clean and not pounding on makeup
  • Give your moisturizer at least 5 minutes to set in before putting makeup on
  • Stray away from lots of exfoliating products that will make your skin dry out or become more sensitive (cleansers are usually more gentle than exfoliating scrubs)
  • Don’t take super hot showers- this allows more bacteria to get into your skin and opens your pores up.
  • Use a humidifier in your room to keep more moisturizer in the air!
  • Drink lots of water!
  • Take Warm Baths instead of Scalding hot baths (to avoid breaking down the lipid barriers in the skin)

‘Tis the season of Stress: Stress and Anxiety Busters

The most wonderful time of the year! And also the most stressful. Buying gifts, going to holiday parties, decorating, and fitting everything in. Keeping your health and wellness in check can be difficult during these times. It is always important to do everything ahead of time (buying gifts, planning, organizing for the holidays) before hand. This year I personally bought all of my Christmas gifts in November so that I could relax and enjoy my December.

Here are some tips that I have for avoiding stress this Holiday Season:

  1. Get everything that you can done early, don’t procrastinate!
  2. Make time for yourself- don’t take things out of your schedule just because you have more going on. Working out and Self care is just as important as it was last month or the month before.
  3. Spend time with loved ones while you can, They won’t always be here and now is the time to cherish it and make memories.
  4. Don’t spread yourself too thin. Don’t sign up for EVERY activity you can to volunteer, go to a play/show, take a trip, make something, donate something, contribute, etc. Plan your goodness out along the whole month to be able to give a lot but not give away all of your time and energy along with it-make it enjoyable.
  5. Treat yourself too! Don’t forget it is okay to indulge yourself after buying presents for others all month! Cut yourself some slack!
  6. Anything that needs to be shipped- get it shipped ASAP or pay for Express shipping so that you don’t have to worry about it.
  7. Try using essential oils or candles to promote relaxation and decrease stress.
  8. Reduce your caffeine intake if possible- this can decrease stress and is better for your body. Even though you might be more tired, less caffeine is better for your body.
  9. Take a warm bath! Use a Christmas or Festive bath bomb and spend time to relax and re-coop.
  10. Exercise is a natural stress and anxiety reliever. Even if it is only 3-4 times a week, make time for those workouts! It can help you more than you think and it will never harm you, it can only help!

 

December is a busy and stressful month! But, it doesn’t have to be. It should be a happy and exciting time. Use these tips & tricks to make sure that you enjoy the Holidays too- no matter what your responsibilities might be!

 

My Favorite Workout Routines/ Best and Most Effective ways to use the Gym

My favorite workouts are a variety of things….

  1. Pure Barre (3-5 times a week)
  2. Solid Core (1-2 times a week)
  3. Spin Class (1 time a week)
  4. Gym to lift and do cardio (1-2 times a week)

I never workout 10 times a week…. I do MAX 7. This is just an outline of what I like to do and how often I try to fit it in if I am focusing on it that week. Be realistic with yourself and your goals!

Everyone is different and what works for them/ what they enjoy is probably different and varies vastly from what works for me/ what I enjoy. Nevertheless, I would highly recommend trying Pure Barre, Solid Core, or Spin class… but sometimes these workouts can get too expensive for people so they stick with the gym which can be just as effective when done properly.

When I go to the gym…. This is usually what my routine looks like:

Stretch or roll out on a foam roller. —– 5-10 minutes

Start with Cardio for a warm-up (stair master or treadmill for 20 minutes, stair master is most effective for burning fat). ——20 minutes

Move onto your selected body part for that day to work (bi’s, tris, legs, back, shoulders, etc.)  ——–45 minutes- an hour

Take a 5-10 minute cardio cool down to relax and get your heart rate back up. ——–5-10 minutes

End with a core superset (Example: 1 minute plank, 30 crunches, 50 russian twists, and 30 bicycle twists…. and then repeat that 2-3 times). ———5-10 minutes

Tips:

~Going to the gym at least 3-5 times a week is the most effective and if you are trying to lose weight you need to do upwards of 30 minutes of cardio each time.

~If you are trying a new workout like Pure Barre, try at least 10 classes to see if it sticks before deciding that it isn’t for you.

~ Give yourself time to make progress, it doesn’t happen overnight.

~Motivate yourself: whether that’s going to 10 PB classes= a new pair of leggings, or a week of good eating= a cheat day…. set goals and make sure they are obtainable so you can stay motivated to see the finish line.

~Work with a Personal Trainer or Nutritionist (if this isn’t your budget, research online will do just fine) to make a strict eating schedule that works for you. The reason that I recommend this is because having someone to motivate you and keep you on track is often very, helpful.

Everyone is different and has their own personal goals and motivation! Stay healthy this Holiday season. It is okay to have cookies and cake, but you need to stay accountable even when you are busy to make time to prepare good food and good workouts.
